A la mort de sa mère en 1897, Cézanne vend la Bastide de Jas de Bouffan. Il fait alors construire son atelier au Nord de Aix-en-Provence. Il peint les murs en gris et met du parquet au sol pour obtenir la meilleure lumière. Il est un peintre lent et met beaucoup de temps à choisir ses couleurs.
